Medical Facts Before Marriage
All of us should know some important medical facts before our marriage. Here are some health issues that should be known by all:
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS or Aids) is a collection of symptoms and infections resulting from the specific damage to the immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The late stage of the condition leaves individuals prone to opportunistic infections and tumors. Although treatments for AIDS and HIV exist to slow the virus's progression, there is no known cure. HIV is transmitted through direct contact of a mucous membrane or the bloodstream with a bodily fluid containing HIV, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-seminal fluid, and breast milk. This transmission can come in the form of anal, vaginal or oral sex, blood transfusion, contaminated hypodermic needles, exchange between mother and baby during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding, or other exposure to one of the above bodily fluids. In 2005 alone, AIDS claimed an estimated 2.4–3.3 million lives, of which more than 570,000 were children.

Many people are dying today because of Hepatitis B and C disease. Both of these affect the liver. Hepatitis B causes liver damage that may lasts for six months or more. Though it is preventable, individuals affected with Hepatitis B can pass it along to other people. However, a Hepatitis C causes sever liver damage leading to liver cancer and has no vaccination yet. The Hepatitis diseases are usually transferred through unsafe sexual practices or the exchange of bodily fluids between affected individuals. Also, they are caused by the use of unhygienic needles, poor drinking water supply, and are commonly passed along by affected mothers during pregnancies. We should test whether any of us possess the disease.

Blood group compatibility is a major issue. Everybody bride and groom should test their blood before marriage. Among the blood problems, thalassemia is a problem that causes the body to produce less hemoglobin. It is genetically transferred through individuals. Since malignant genes cause the disorder, both parents need to possess the genes for the disease to be passed on to their children. Another problem is, alpha thalassemia. Alpha thalassemia comes in two packages, Major Trait and Minor Trait. Minor Trait occurs when a person has one or two alpha thalessemia gene(s) damaged that can either remain dormant or cause mild anemia. Major Trait occurs when a person has four alpha thalassemia genes malignant and can cause sever anemia, or even stillborn pregnancies. So, we should be aware of our blood because it can damage the health of our future children.

Before marriage, all of us should test our blood for our own sake. It will discover our health risks and prevent further spreading the disease. So, blood test should be given the top priority.
