Bangladeshi Marriage Festivals
|
The marriage ceremony is the top most pompous & interesting among the entire social ceremonies in Bangladesh . It is one of main festival to poor, middle even upper class people. People of all classes spent their almost economic ability for this purpose. Hence, Bengali people are very free to spend more for this ceremony. It has been centenary from a long time.

An engagement is an agreement or promise to marry, and also refers to the time between proposal and marriage. During this period, a couple is said to be affianced, engaged to be married, or simply engaged.

This is the first stage of pompous Bengali marriage ceremony. Traditionally the party is hosted by the bride’s parents. The Engagement Ring is given to bride by the guardian of groom in this function. Generally, the function is arranged at the house of bride. Some people arrange the function at restaurant.

Normally the father or mother of bridegroom gives ring to bride. At the absence of parents, any one senior relative of the groom gives the ring to bride. At this occasion, the date of marries and the amounts of ‘Denmahor’ are fixed by the discussion of the guardians of two families.

This is the most interesting program of Bangladeshi marriage. It is separately arranged by both the Bride and Groom parties. The boys and girls of the house of bridegroom go to the house of bride with different items, which is necessary for this festival, such as Sharee, Garland of flowers, Turmeric paste, Mehendi paste, sweet etc. The bride wears the sharee; flower’s ornaments then one by one besmear the bride, particularly in the face, hands and feet, with pasted turmeric, mixed with grass, mustard seed and henna. In this time, women sing many songs all regarding marriage and dance haphazardly. This custom has been wholly taken from Hindu’s Holi Festival. At last, he/she has to take a bath to wash turmeric.

On the same way, the boys & girls of the bride’s house come to the groom house to enjoy the same festival there.

|
“Mehedi” festival is also stared at the same day at the house of bride. The girls draw the beautiful design on hands of the bride. At the house of groom, the same occasion is also arranged.

Finally it comes “marriage” for that Panchini (Engagement), Gaye Halood, were arranged. This festival is arranged either at the Community Center or Wedding Hall or Hotel & Restaurant or at the house of bride. So the relatives of bridegroom arrange a journey to specified venue to attend that ceremony. This journey is called “Barjattra”.

After complete the marriage register then every invited person enjoy feast program. Normally Polow, Briani, Chickens Roust, Sweet dish etc are the menu of the feast. Groom comes in bride stage. Then they inter change their eye contract & change their “Mala Badal”. This part is called “Shah Nazar”. This part is conduced by bride sister & sister-in-low.

After that, the crucial time is coming; it is time for bride farewell. In this moment start a very painful situation. Every body becomes so painful. Bride parents fall down their tears & other relatives give every responsibility of Bride to the Groom.
